I provide training and consultancy for organisations in the voluntary, statutory and private sectors, particularly for those working in mental health and wellbeing. Areas of expertise include: sexual abuse; trauma; dissociation; sexual orientation and gender identity; reflective supervision; managing vicarious trauma, and the contribution of existential phenomenology to therapeutic practice.
Previous training and consultancy work has included :
- Working with male and female adult survivors of child sexual abuse.
- Working therapeutically with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered people.
- Equality and Diversity training.
- Working with men who have been raped, sexually assaulted and/or sexually abused.
- Child Protection for counsellors, psychotherapists and mental health workers.
- Introduction to Pre-therapy for mental health workers.
- Training on fostering and adoption by same-sex couples for Barnardos, Scottish Adoption Agency and family Social Workers.
- I organised Scotland’s first national conference on counselling and psychotherapy with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered clients (Out of Mind, 2000).
- I organised a national event on childhood trauma and recovery (2007).
- I prepared a paper for the Scottish Government's Health Department on the mental health of LGBT people in Scotland, with recommendations for action. Click here to view as a Word document.
- I wrote a section of NHS Lothian's Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy (2005-2010) on the mental health and well-being of LGBT people.
- Funded by the Department for International Development, I visited Sverdlovsk Oblast in Russia on two occasions to assist with the development of local non-government organisations in order to improve the infrastructure for reducing the incidence of HIV and to improve services for those already HIV-positive.
- I have presented the findings from my research into suicidal thoughts, feelings and behaviours amongst young gay and bisexual men at a number of national and international conferences, including:
